GRITGLOW · CARE NOTES

A gentler way to wash your car.

A simple hand-wash routine for US drivers: loosen the dirt first, clean with a soft touch, and keep wash water out of storm drains.

THE ROUTINE

Four steps, top to bottom

  1. Start cool and read your manual

Park in the shade and let hot bodywork cool. Follow your vehicle’s own instructions for special finishes, exterior equipment, and washing methods.

  2. Rinse away loose dirt

Rinse the body from top to bottom before wiping. This lifts dust and grit so you can clean the surface more gently.

  3. Wash gently in small sections

Use car-wash soap and a clean, soft mitt or cloth. Work from the roof downward, rinse the cloth often, and avoid hard scrubbing. Toyota’s Venza manual also recommends a soft cloth, thorough rinsing after soap, and wiping the water away.

  4. Rinse thoroughly, then dry

Rinse off remaining soap and wipe the body dry with a clean, soft towel. If you use a pressure washer, keep the nozzle away from openings and follow your vehicle manual’s distance and pressure limits.

AT HOME

Choose where the water goes

The US EPA recommends using a commercial car wash, where wastewater is managed and many facilities filter or recycle water. If you wash at home, choose a surface such as grass or gravel, use nontoxic phosphate-free soap sparingly, shut off the hose while washing, and empty the bucket into an indoor sink or toilet. Don’t let soapy runoff reach a street or storm drain.

Local stormwater rules can differ. Check your city or county guidance before washing on pavement or near a drain.
